The Scientific Fighting Congress
The Scientific Fighting Congress (SFC) is an organization created in the mid-90's to teach realistic, life-saving self-defense. Its founder, W. Hock Hochheim, an Army veteran, law enforcement officer, and black-belted martial arts instructor (including a Black Belt Magazine Weapons Instructor of the Year), is a world-renowned expert in the field. Hock saw the need for bridging the gap between the military, law enforcement, and martial arts communities to share the knowledge that each had with the others. To this he also added the contributions of the "aware citizenry" such as sports training, medicine, psychology and the law to form a comprehensive body of knowledge and training program for realistic self-defense and combatives.
SFC Concepts
There are several concepts about the SFC that make it a world-class system. It is principle-based, as opposed to technique-based, making it more adaptable. It’s comprehensive in its coverage of all aspects of combatives, from initially identifying and avoiding dangerous situations, to dealing with the legal ramifications afterward. It’s simple in its approach to learning and application, but avoids the Keep it Simple Stupid (KISS) model of training—dumbing training down results in dumb self-defense. And it’s progressive in that it introduces students to the realities of self-defense using training methods that gradually equip them to deal with the chaos of fighting. In addition, there are numerous common-sense maxims one will often hear.
SFC Styles
The SFC is divided into various interrelated programs or "styles" that allow focused attention into specific areas of self-defense. At present these programs are:
-
Unarmed Combatives (UC)
-
Knife/Counter-Knife Combatives (KC)
-
Solo/Dos Manos System (SDMS)
-
Gun/Counter-Gun Combatives (GC)
-
Close-Quarter Combatives (CQC)
-
Police Judo (PJ)
-
Pacific Archipelago Combatives (PAC)
Innovative Martial Arts (IMA) teaches the PAC program. Due to its comprehensive nature, training and rank may be obtained in UC, KC, and SDMS independently or collectively under the PAC umbrella. Specialized training in elements of GC, CQC, and PJ is also available.
The SFC and IMA
Both founders of Innovative Martial Arts are black belts in the SFC with years of experience teaching its concepts. This has resulted in numerous correlations between the SFC and other IMA offerings such as SanYun Do and A3P. Therefore, IMA students will be able to learn PAC material very quickly. The PAC system provides for either a comprehensive armed and unarmed system by itself, or a supplemental program of focused armed training for other IMA practitioners.
